Buried Capacitance

buried capacitance PCB technology with thin dielectric layer for improved signal integrity

What Is Buried Capacitance?

A capacitor is an electronic component that stores electrical energy and helps maintain stable power within a circuit. It supports the operation of processors and other electronic components by reducing power fluctuations and electrical noise.

Buried capacitance technology uses a very thin dielectric layer inside the PCB structure to create distributed capacitance. This can improve signal integrity, power delivery, and overall PCB performance.

The term “buried” refers to the capacitance being built within the internal layers of the PCB, below the surface layers where many electronic components are mounted.

Buried Capacitance Benefits

Buried capacitance technology offers several advantages for high-speed PCB designs, including

  • Improved signal integrity
  • Better power distribution
  • Lower EMI
  • Enhanced reliability

It can also reduce the need for high-frequency bypass capacitors and help minimize unwanted resonance effects in electronic circuits.

Buried Capacitance Applications

Buried capacitance technology is often used in PCBs with high-power or complex microprocessors. It helps save board space by placing
capacitance inside the PCB layers instead of around the processor.
