Similarities and Differences Between Flex and Rigid-Flex PCBs

Flex and rigid-flex PCBs can both bend and fit into small or unusual spaces. However, they have different structures and uses.

A flex PCB is made of thin, flexible material. It can have one, two, or multiple copper layers. It is often used when the circuit needs to bend, fold, or move.

A rigid-flex PCB combines flexible and rigid sections in one board. The flexible sections connect the rigid sections. Components are usually placed on the rigid sections.

Rigid-flex PCBs can replace separate circuit boards, cables, and connectors. This can reduce the number of parts, save space, and make assembly easier. It can also improve connection reliability.

The main difference is simple. A flex PCB is flexible across most or all of the board. A rigid-flex PCB has both flexible and rigid sections.
